Ben and Simiao’s 10th Anniversary

Can you believe it’s been a decade? Ten years, a move from Chicago to Columbus, and three kids later, we’d love an excuse to party with our friends both old and new.

Festivities will start at 6pm. Dinner and drinks provided with after party to follow around 9pm at the Grandview Theatre (10 min walk). Children welcome although you may want a sitter for the after-party (we can help with this - let us know). We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Travel

Grandview Heights is an oasis within Columbus and technically its own town (all one square mile of it). We are located 10 minutes east of the heart of downtown Columbus.

By car

Columbus is easy to get to and is a very car-friendly town (read: less public transportation-friendly). Parking is readily available almost everywhere.

By air

John Glenn International (CMH) is a 15 minute drive from Grandview Heights. It’s not a huge airport so it’s easy to navigate and security tends to go quickly. An Uber from the airport to Grandview is about $35 one-way. If you plan to explore the city beyond Grandview, we recommend renting a car (or communicating with us about your needs).

Accommodations

We recommend staying at one of two hotels in the Grandview Yard neighborhood (Courtyard Columbus OSU at 780 Yard St, Columbus, OH 43212 or Hyatt Place Columbus/OSU at 795 Yard St, Columbus, OH 43212), a 5 min drive to the party venue. It’s walkable to food (High Bank distillery, Hofbrauhaus, Basic Biscuits (breakfast), and Nile Vegan (Ethiopian cuisine) and a longer walk to the main Grandview Ave retail area.

Activities

Grandview

Stauf’s Coffee is a local institution

The Avenue Steakhouse for cocktails and/or dinner

Pure Imagination Chocolatier for some tasty souvenirs

Grandview Mercantile for art, vintage furniture, and interesting jewelry

Watershed kitchen & bar - amazing cocktail list made with locally distilled spirits

Echo Spirits - interesting locally distilled rum-based cocktail bar

Food

Columbus has an amazing cocktail, craft brew, and international food scene. If you’re looking for something specific please talk to Simiao!

Touristy things

The Columbus Zoo - really large and well-curated; Jack Hanna’s zoo!

Center for Science and Industry (COSI) - hands-on exhibits for adults and kids with a toddler zone (run free, little ones!)

Franklin Park Conservatory - lots of biomes in this multi-room greenhouse and an amazing kids outdoor play area

The National Air Force Museum - admission is free and worth the little less than an hour’s drive to walk through JFK’s Air Force One and see 5 hangers of planes from first in flight to Space Force exhibits. Close to Young’s Dairy (eat ice cream and feed some goats) and Yellow Springs (hippie college town, home to Dave Chapelle)

National Veterans Memorial And Museum - full disclosure, never been because… kids... but hear it’s good

The Shoe (home of Buckeyes football if you’re into that sort of thing. OH!). Keep it moving, Littletons…

Otherworld - a hands-on art installation that is out of this world

The great outdoors

Columbus has an awesome system of Metro Parks which are large and well-serviced

Scioto Audubon Metro Park - adjacent to German Village with a view of downtown. Large playground and nature center!

Quarry Trails Metro Park - closest and newest Metro Park with a short zip line, playground, and a short trail around the water-filled quarry. And a waterfall!

Batelle Darby Metro Park - home to its own herd of bison and a large nature center with an impressive native fish tank

Glacier Ridge Metro Park - inventive wood playground and short obstacle course for kids and adults

High Bank Metro Park - 3 story playground and short zip line with short hikes along a river

Hocking Hills (1+ hour drive) - for some true elevation change and waterfalls

Neighborhoods

Short North - fancy artsy part of town with various galleries, cafes, and clothing stores. Check out the historic North Market food stalls (recommend Hoyo’s Kitchen)

German Village - historic brick-paved neighborhoods with beautiful houses - check out the Book Loft, Pistachio Vera (French pastries), Winan’s coffee, Schiller Park, and Lawbird or Antiques on High for cocktails

Clintonville - Dough Mama for breakfast or lunch and cap it off with some Whit’s custard. The Whetstone Park of Roses houses a formidable citizen-maintained formal rose garden and is a special spot for the Li family. Cub Shrub and Tiger Tree (one store) are hands-down the best children’s and grown up gift shop, period. Other fun home and gift shops on this block include Small Talk (Womens’ clothing) and the Brass Hand (plants).

Downtown - start at Parable cafe (croissants are a must-try and usually sell out before noon),meander over to Bicentennial Park, then walk over the Rich St bridge for a view of the downtown skyline and to sight a friendly deer
